המרכז לקרטוקונוס – פרופ' ניר ארדינסט התאמת עדשות לקרטוקונוס התחיל את פעילתו באבו גוש לפני יותרמ 20 שנים (שנת 2002). מספר שנים מאוחר יותר הצטרפו קליניקות מיוחדות כמסונפים למרכז לקרטוקונוס. במרכז לקרטוקונוס פרופ' ניר ארדינסט קיים ציוד מתקדם ביותר לרבות מיפויי קרנית פנטקם (מיפוי קרנית אחורי מבוסס שיימפלוג עם מערכת דימות לסקרליות), מיפוי סקלרלי הממפה את לובן העין (ולא רק את הקרנית שעליו יושבת למעשה העדשה הסקלרלית. בעזרת פרופיל משטח העין לרבות הסקלרה (Eye Surface Profiler) ניתן לקבל עשרות עד אלפי נקודות נתונים על פני הסקלרה (לובן העין) והקרנית של הפציינט. נתונים מועברים לתוכנת מחשב של המיפוי (מייד לאחר ביצוע המיפוי) היכולה לתכנן את העיצוב, הקוטר, עומק העדשה הסקלרלית (סאג) כך שהעדשה הסקלרלית תתאים כמו "כפפה ליד" לאסימטריה הייחודית הלובן של העין שכאמור עליו העדשה הסקלרלית מונחת כאשר מחקרים מראים כי ל 95% אין סקלרה סימטריץ לחלוטין). מצב זה מקנה הרכה ממושכת יותר, חלוקת לחץ, הרכבה בריאה יותר, העדר לחץ על כלי דם (בלאנצינג), חסכון ביכולת רענון של העדשה ועוד.

The Keratoconus Center – Prof. Nir Erdinest, specializing in keratoconus contact lens fitting, began operating in Abu Ghosh more than 20 years ago (2002). Several years later, specialized clinics joined as branches of The Keratoconus Center. The Center is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art instrumentation, including Pentacam corneal tomography (posterior corneal mapping based on Scheimpflug imaging with a scleral imaging module) and scleral mapping that maps the ocular surface (the white of the eye) and not only the cornea on which the scleral lens actually rests. Using an Eye Surface Profiler that captures the eye surface including the sclera, tens to thousands of data points can be obtained from the patient’s sclera and cornea. The data are transferred immediately to the mapping software, which can design the lens geometry, diameter, and sagittal depth so that the scleral lens fits like a glove on the hand to the unique asymmetry of the patient’s sclera (studies show that 95% of patients do not have a perfectly symmetric sclera). This fitting provides longer wearing comfort, better pressure distribution, healthier lens application, absence of pressure on blood vessels (no blanching), improved tear exchange under the lens, and other benefits.

The Keratoconus Center – Prof. Nir Erdinest also includes a digital slit lamp and a professional, highly skilled clinical team. Prof. Nir Erdinest was the first in Israel to fit scleral contact lenses using freeform/computerized fitting (Freeform Scleral Lens Fitting). Freeform or computerized freeform fitting of scleral lenses is an advanced technique that improves overall visual quality (not only visual acuity) and reduces distortions, smearing, glare, or ghosting that many keratoconus patients report. Freeform fitting is a straightforward but advanced method that uses 3D mapping technology and 3D‑designed lenses to create precisely customized contact lenses for the eye’s anatomy without the need for a physical trial lens set.
